A Nepali in New York

Hey guys ! I am Karsang Gurung a Nepali student living in New York City since the last two years . I came here in the year 2008 with a dream to live an" American Dream" just like every person coming to America from other countries. After 17 long hours of flight and landing to JFK from Hong Kong my head felt light headed . They said I was experiencing Jet lack whatever they call it. As soon as I stepped out of the airport I was so disappointed at first sight. I was shocked at what I saw outside the taxi window .The New York that I saw was not my expectation of New York I had always envisioned my entire life. I saw only two or three to four storey buildings unlike the buildings that I saw in movies . Call me a stereotype or fresh off the boat some people may call it. I later came to know I was in Queens and going to Brooklyn. I kept quiet the whole trip to a new home I was going to live in. Newkirk Ave a place where most of my relatives live. It is crowded with mixed backgrounds of people . There are thousands of Nepali people living in NYC.There are Nepali communities widespread in the five boroughs of New york . The most prominent of all the places for the Nepali community ' Jackson Heights ' can be called little India or even little Nepal. Even though going to Jackson heights will endure you a pure experience of India and Nepal with shops selling Indian and Nepali lifestyle clothing , food and drinks, authentic Nepali restaurants catering to Nepali cuisine to gentleman flocking in momo shops throughout the jackson heights chowk which should be a new name given . The one I am most familiar with is 'Brooklyn '.Matter of fact also because I live in the suburbs of Brooklyn. When people back home or from Queens or Manhattan ask where I live and they always end up saying " OH!" when i answer I live in Brooklyn .Hey ! don't judge the name and be a stereotype of saying Brooklyn sounds really suburb and boring place to live in . You got it all wrong people, being brooklynite I have enjoyed living in a apartment lifestyle in Brooklyn with my aunt . I enjoy the fresh air, the trees on every blocks , the nice old victorian houses , the indian and pakistani shops that reminds of home and playing in the public school parks. After all living in Brooklyn is not bad at all. I enjoy my daily commute to my work at Park slope which is even a nicer place to live in. The slope is somewhat a reminiscent of 'West village ' in Manhattan . In the summer , the coney island boardwalk is a perfect place to find yourself at peace when the sun sets. Living in Brooklyn is not a bad idea after all . I am a simple nepali living in New york trying to find myself for myself . I dream of living in the heights someday in a apartment all to myself , but its just a dream and I will try my best to make it come true.
